A Queer Mother for the Nation Redux: Gabriela Mistral in the Twenty-First Century

Over the course of the twenty-first century’s first decade, the latest episode in this long-running series unfolded. The virulent homophobic displays from members of the intelligentsia were, perhaps, a little more visibly hateful than earlier manifestations, a little more panicked. Why? In this article, I analyze the queer mother for the nation redux — an expansion of my earlier queer mother for the nation — showing how Mistral, Chile’s 1945 Nobel Prize winner in literature and worldrenowned poet, continues to illuminate the struggle for true participation in Chile’s much-vaunted democracy. I highlight the role of archiving and of queer archiving in this most recent eruption. Additionally, this nexus lays bare the persistence of elites in defining national culture, the collusion of capital and government in the interpretation and circulation of cultural goods, and the status of culture itself in postdictatorship Chile.
