Jean-Baptiste Lully: Omnes gentes (1685)
Posted onMarch 23, 2020bykethuprofumo
Esteemed Readers, here is another little piece of the Sacral music by Jean-Baptiste Lully. It belongs to the same set of “Les Petits Motets” & is called Omnes gentes. They are based on Psalms/Salmi 46-47 expressed in accordance with Lully’s passion & artistic vision. I believe that the Sacral music has been exceptional in any epoch. So we should be more curious & popularize it more in our dark days of the world. The light must come from our hearts, while the Sacred music is the fire to burn it.
I attach the text of Psalm/Salmo 47 to add the sense & solemnity to your listening:
O clap your hands together all ye people: O sing unto God with a voice of melody.
For the Lord is high, and to be feared: he is the great King above all the earth.
He hath subdued the people under us: and the nations under our feet.
He hath chosen his inheritance for us: the excellency of Jacob, which he loved.
God is gone up with a merry noise: and the Lord with the sound of the trump.
O sing praises, sing praises unto our God: O sing praises, sing praises unto our King. •
For God is the king of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.

Once in a while a disc lands on my desk which is devoted to a composer I had never heard of. That is the case with the present disc which comprises six partitas by Johann Abraham Schmierer, apparently the only compositions from his pen which have come down to us. Schmierer is an almost completely unknown quantity: he has no entry in New Grove, but - according to the liner-notes - he is mentioned in the German encyclopedia Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart. Ho
